Angelina - 3rd year of apprenticeship

I am currently in my third year of training as a media and information services specialist and am completing my training at Clausthal University Library.

The school-based part of my training takes place at the Multi-Media Berufsbildende Schule (MMBbS) in Hanover at Expo Plaza. The lessons take place in block phases, each lasting two to three weeks. During this time, the focus is on the theoretical content of the training programme.

My working day starts in the morning with various routine tasks. These include putting returned books on the shelves, collecting the daily in-house mail and checking in newly arrived magazine issues. I then work in different departments, which I rotate through on a weekly or fortnightly basis. There I gain an insight into the respective areas of work and am increasingly allowed to take on tasks independently. In the afternoons, I work on projects or school-related tasks.

A central part of my training is working at the service desk, the library's enquiry and information desk. Here I support users with researching the library catalogue, using digital services and answering technical questions, for example about the Wi-Fi connection or operating the printers. The enquiry service requires patience and clear communication, a skill that I was able to develop during my training.

Another focus of my training is media processing. In this area of work, new media are systematically recorded, catalogued and technically prepared so that they can be found and borrowed by users.

In the course of my training, I was also able to take on independent tasks that fit in well with my personal strengths and interests. I had the opportunity to contribute creatively in many areas. Whether it was designing posters, exhibiting monthly theme tables or developing and designing a new logo. I was able to develop my creative side and at the same time contribute to the library's public relations work.

The training was very instructive and varied for me. I was able to utilise my strengths in a targeted way. I learnt to take responsibility, make decisions and remain friendly and solution-oriented even in stressful situations. I really enjoy the direct contact with the users. Personally, I can only recommend the training programme!
